The Family of Winnfred Wright

During an action in early 2001, The Family picked up bespectacled 19-year-old college dropout named Kali Polk-Matthews at a bus stop.

Polk-Matthews, who is half black and half white, was living with her mother in San Francisco at the time. She'd been a track star in high school and was admitted to a selective black women's college in Atlanta, but after a year away from the Bay Area, she decided to come back.

The new wife sparked jealousy in Campbell, who'd believed she shared a more intense connection with Wright than the other women, and felt threatened by attentions Wright gave Polk-Matthews. When Campbell complained bitterly to Wright, he grabbed her neck and choked her until she was on the verge of passing out, according to the SF Weekly.

At the same time that Wright was expanding his harem, he'd point out sexist behavior on television to his teenage daughters. "Men are dogs," he'd warn them, the paper said.

While the new wife adjusted to life inside the bizarre household, the oldest wife and "lead mother" learned she was dying.
