Like his first marriage, Tobin's second marriage ended in divorce. In 1986, at the age of 40, Tobin met 16-year-old Cathy Wilson at a bar in Brighton. The couple were wed three years later and moved to Bathgate, West Lothian. This marriage came to an end less than three years later and Tobin moved to Margate, Kent, where he remained until 1991, when he again moved, this time settling in Havant Hampshire.

In 1994, Tobin was arrested in Hampshire for raping and sodomizing two teenage girls. For his crimes he was sentenced to life imprisonment, but earned an early release in May 2004. Due to the nature of his crimes he was automatically registered as a sex offender.

Following his release from prison, Tobin relocated to Glasgow. Using the alias Pat McLaughlin, Tobin was hired as a handyman at St. Patrick's Church, where he met 23-year-old Polish student Angelika Kluk.

In September 2006, Kluk's bound and gagged body was found hidden in a void beneath a confessional box inside the church. An autopsy of the victim revealed she had been struck in the head multiple times, raped, and then stabbed sixteen times in the chest. Forensic evidence found at the scene suggested Kluk was still alive when she was placed under the floorboards.

An investigation into the young woman's death revealed she was last seen helping Tobin paint a shed in a garage attached to the church. Tobin denied any involvement and attempted to place the blame on the church priest, Father Gerry Nugent. Presented with evidence that he had had sexual intercourse with the victim, Tobin said the sex was consensual. Unconvinced, police arrested Tobin and in April 2007 he went to trial. Following six weeks of testimony, Judge Lord Menzies found Tobin guilty of murdering Kluk.
