LONDON (Crime Library) — Police investigating the 1991 disappearance of a teenage girl have announced the discovery of skeletal remains in the back garden of a home that was once occupied by convicted sex offender and killer Peter Britton Tobin, 61, in the town of Margate.

Forensic teams using Geophysics equipment to identify areas where the ground had been disturbed discovered the remains on Monday, after an exhaustive 12-hour search of the back yard of Tobin's former residence.

Essex Police would not reveal what prompted the search of the property; however they did acknowledge that the current occupants were not linked to the investigation.

"A police officer gave me a letter explaining that they were hunting for the body of a girl who went missing 16 years ago and that they had information that her body was in [the] house or buried in the garden," Nicola Rose, a neighbor who lives near the three-bedroom house, told Timesonline.co.uk.

Discussing the case with Timesoline, Detective Superintendent Tim Wills said his department would continue to examine the yard and the inside of the house for possible evidence.

"There is still a great deal of work to be done and Essex Police continues to be supported fully by Kent Police and other specialists," Wills said.

The remains are believed to be those of 18-year-old Dinah McNicol, a student from Tillingham in Essex, who disappeared on August 4, 1991, after hitchhiking from a music festival in Hampshire. Dinah was with a male friend, when they accepted a ride from a man in Hampshire. Her friend was dropped off near Reigate, Surrey, but Dinah opted to continue on with the man to Essex. She has not been seen since. In the days following her disappearance, her ATM card was used in Hampshire and Essex to withdraw large amounts of money from her bank account.
