Paradise Lost: The Disappearance of Natalee Holloway
A Rift Between Friends
In another version of the story, this one reported by Jossy Mansur, editor of the Aruban newspaper Diario, Joran told police investigators that he suspected Deepak may have returned to the beach after dropping him off at home.
According to Mansur, someone put a copy of a confidential police report in the mailbox outside the newspaper's office. The report, according to Mansur, documents statements Joran made to the police on June 13, 2005, four days after his arrest. The report bears the signatures of four police officers whom Mansur said he knows personally.
The report, as translated into English from the original Dutch, reads:
The suspect J.A.P. (Joran) van der Sloot walked with us (the police) a little bit further on and he declared to have suspicions that the suspect D. Kalpoe did bury the girl there somewhere.
According to the suspect J.A.P. van der Sloot, the suspect D. Kalpoe had returned to the girl after having left her sleeping on the beach. To our question to the suspect J.A.P. van der Sloot what he thought had happened between the girl Natalee Holloway and the suspect D. Kalpoe, he declared that he thought that the suspect D. Kalpoe raped and killed the girl.
Thus written by us, under oath made under our testimony, closed and signed in Oranjestad on June 13th, 2005.
Mansur has not released the names of the four Aruban police officers who signed the report, although he says he is positive the report is authentic.
"It is a legitimate police report," Mansur told Crime Library, "signed and attested to by four of the police interrogators in the case."
On June 29, 2005, Joran and the Kalpoe brothers were left alone in the back seat of a police car. Unknown to them, the police were recording everything they said.
In a heated exchange, Deepak Kalpoe implies that it is Joran who needs to be worried if the police find Natalee.
From a translated transcript of the recording:
Deepak: They're going to give you fifteen years if they find the girl.
Joran: For what? For what?
Deepak: That scholarship of yours. Byeeeeeeee. You can forget it.
(Joran had earned a scholarship to a school in the United States)
Joran: Yeah, by who? By you, retard. You know well that you did bad, otherwise you wouldn't lie.
Both Brothers: aaiaaieaaieeaiee! (some type of screaming sound)
Joran: I should have killed you, retard. Shut your trap.
