At a Long Island, N.Y., mall, Tiffany Evans, 22, approached an 18-year-old woman and, telling her she looked upset, offered to read her fortune. An initial cost of $25 turned into $100, and two days later the women met again. This time the victim handed over $600 for a stone and some red body wash to cleanse her of a curse, but the price Evans set was $1,250. The victim promised to pay the rest the next day, but, becoming suspicious, called police instead. Evans was arrested at the mall and charged with fraudulent accosting, attempted grand larceny and fortune telling, a misdemeanor in New York.
