El Dorado, KS (Crime Library) — Late last week, investigators found the body of missing community college student Emily Sander, 18, dumped along a highway in Woodson County. Police are now focusing their investigation on locating 24-year-old Israel Mireles, a man police say is a suspect in what has now become a homicide investigation.

Emily's body was found on Thursday afternoon, during the fifth day of a ground search conducted by the El Dorado Police Department and the Butler County Sheriff's Department. According to police, she had been dumped over a steep embankment along U.S. 54, approximately 50 miles east of El Dorado. Close to her body, investigators found a bedspread they had previously reported as missing from Mireles's motel room.

A forensic orthodontist made the positive identification of the body on Saturday. An autopsy was also conducted; however, the results of that examination and the cause of death have been sealed by the county attorney's office and are not available to the media.

Following the discovery of the body, Butler County Attorney Jan Satterfield spoke to the media and said investigators are focusing their efforts on locating Mireles, so they can bring him in for questioning.

"The main thing is just hoping that he turns himself in and that we talk to him," Satterfield stated, adding that investigators want to make sure "his girlfriend is all right, that her baby is all right."

In a statement released to the media, El Dorado Police Chief Tom Boren said he believes Mireles's 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Victoria Martens, is with him "of her own volition, but investigators fear for her continued welfare, as well as that of her unborn child."
