Richmond, Va. (Crime Library) -- Continued

From this statement of Fawley's a number of questions arise. Why didn't he use Taylor's cell phone to call for help? Or why didn't he try to contact his ex-girlfriend's parents, who lived nearby, to get some help? Where did he get the plastic bag in that remote location?  Why did he dump her body in a plastic bag where it would be unlikely that anyone would find her? Why did he put stolen license plates on Taylor's car?

While there may be reasonable answers to these questions, and the Richmond police are investigating Fawley's alleged statement, the story does not inspire confidence.

Another theory, though unproven, is that Taylor, when asked by her roommate for privacy with the roommate's visiting boyfriend, decided to go skateboarding with some of the acquaintances that she had recently made. Taylor told her roommate of that decision and said she would be back in a couple of hours. The time was about 10:20 p.m.

To avoid parking fees close to the campus, Taylor frequently parked her 1997 white Ford Escort near Fawley's residence on Hancock Street where parking was not metered. She met up with Fawley, perhaps to borrow a skateboard from him or to get her car.

Fawley, 38, had a documented history of pursuing women much younger than himself,  and in Taylor's case, he was more than twice her age. Eventually, his younger girlfriends found him unacceptable and tried to distance themselves from him. In the past few years, Fawley had become obsessed with at least three girlfriends and acted violently when they tried to break off the relationship. His behavior was described as frightening and intimidating. One former girlfriend was choked. She had to get a restraining order to protect her from his violence. Fawley suffers from bi-polar disorder and receives a monthly disability check from Social Security.

When another former girlfriend found a male roommate, Fawley became obsessed with the notion that she was having a sexual relationship with the roommate and broke into the apartment around 4 a.m. carrying with him a hammer and a can of mace. The roommate eventually diffused the situation. It is difficult to find a benign explanation for Fawley's behavior. In fact, Fawley followed up with the same former girlfriend in another violent episode.
