SPENCER, Mass. (Crime Library)  — Investigators have found the body of a woman missing since last month in a shallow grave behind an abandoned school this past weekend.  Autopsy results are still pending; however, police believe she was murdered by her husband sometime last month.

On May 15, 2007, 35-year-old Cheri Robinson's coworkers at Allegro Microsystems Inc. notified police that she had failed to show up for work for several days in a row.  When police went to Cheri's apartment, no one answered the door.  Approximately 30 minutes later, Cheri's husband, 40-year-old Paul Robinson, placed a call to the Spencer Police Department and told them he may have "hurt" his wife a few days earlier.  He also said that he was armed with a gun.

After police arrived on the scene, Robinson gave them some details about where his wife could be found.  Following a three-hour standoff, Robinson told police he was going to send his two children, a girl, 9, and a boy, 11, out of the apartment.  Afterwards, police heard a single gunshot echo in the background.  In response to the gunfire, the Special Tactical Operations Team fired teargas into the apartment.  Once the smoke cleared, investigators rushed inside and found Robinson dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

For nearly a month, police searched for Cheri by both land and by air.  On several occasions, both rescue and cadaver dogs were brought in to assist, but they were unable to pick up on a scent.  When the local police chief spoke with the media about the search for Cheri, he compared it to looking for a needle in a haystack.
