Four days after Liza's disappearance and just as police were beginning to investigate the case, Joseph tried to commit suicide by stepping in front of on-coming traffic. He suffered a broken pelvis and said through his attorney that he was distraught over his wife's disappearance.
"He is professing all this love for her," Sophia said. "I never saw any affection. God only knows why she married him, we tried our best to stop it."
Sophia sees the suicide attempt as evidence of his guilt; police have stopped short of calling him a suspect. They conducted a massive search of a wooded area near the couple's home but came up empty handed.
"We are working on a couple of things that I can't talk about at the moment," said Emerson police Sgt. George Buono, the lead detective on the case. "We've continued to interview acquaintances and people associated with the Murphys and we haven't received any new information that would lead to a conclusion."
Liza's three young children are currently living with Joseph's sister while Joseph recuperates at home from his injuries. He walks with the aid of a walker and is receiving financial aid from his sister because he is a self-employed painter and isn't working, Sophia said.
