LONDON (Crime Library) — Essex police have positively identified a second set of human remains found on a property once occupied by the 61-year-old convicted sex offender and killer Peter Tobin as those of 18-year-old Dinah McNicol, a student from Tillingham in Essex who disappeared more than 16 years ago.

"Police believe that the clothing and jewelry found with the body were consistent with those owned by the 18-year-old," a police spokesperson told Timesonline.co.uk, adding, "DNA samples have confirmed that it's her."

After learning his long-lost daughter had finally been found, Dinah's father, Ian McNicol, 68, accompanied by two police officers, visited the makeshift burial spot where his daughter's remains were found. Afterward he spoke briefly with reporters outside 50 Irvine Drive.

"At least they have found her remains, and I can speak for the whole family when I say we can now put her to rest and grieve in our own time, which is what we have really wanted to do for 16 years," Ian said. "I'd like to thank all the officers who have done their work so well. I've got to come to a conclusion, and that's it. I'll cry on my own."

Tobin was supposed to appear at Linlithgow Sheriff Court last Thursday; however, on Wednesday night he was brutally attacked in his prison cell at Saughton Prison in Edinburgh and rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. According to published reports, William Bermingham, a 21-year-old convicted sex offender, beat Tobin so severely that he suffered cracked ribs and a shattered cheekbone below his right eye.
