Loveless was tired of the affair her girlfriend, 14-year-old Amanda Heavrin, had been having with Shanda. Loveless had warned them both to stop seeing each other on numerous occasions, but the relationship continued. The time for cheery discussions was now over, and Loveless wanted everyone to know just how serious she was.

Laurie Tackett

To set her plan in motion, Loveless asked her friend, 17-year-old Laurie Tackett, to come over and help her iron out the details. Tackett wasn't the brightest kid on the block, but she did have access to a car, something Loveless herself lacked.

On the way to Loveless's house, Tackett picked up two of her friends, Hope Rippey and Toni Lawrence, both 15. Lawrence had never met Loveless before, and Rippey had only met her once or twice herself. Once at Loveless's house, the girls sat around chatting until Loveless pulled a large kitchen knife out of her purse and said she was going to use it to scare Shanda. After explaining the situation to the girls, they all got into Tackett's car and drove to Shanda's house. Shanda would recognize Loveless, so she sent Rippey and Lawrence to the door to lure her out.
