BURLINGTON, Vt. (Crime Library) — Investigators probing the disappearance of University of Vermont co-ed Michelle Gardner-Quinn are zeroing in on a man who lent the young woman his cell phone and was seen walking with her not long before she vanished, calling the unnamed man, "a significant focus of our investigation."
"...The man whose cellular phone Michelle used during the early morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 7, has become a significant focus of our investigation," police said in a statement released this morning. "While we are not naming this person or indicating that he is a suspect specifically at this time, we are releasing still video images of Michelle walking east on Main Street in Burlington with this man at approximately 2:34 a.m. on Saturday."

Authorities are asking anyone who saw them together "in that vicinity or elsewhere" to contact the Burlington Police at (802) 658-2700.
The focus on the man came less than a day after authorities announced that they had effectively closed off another avenue in the investigation after locating and interviewing a mysterious blond man who allegedly tried to lure another woman into his car on the night Michelle vanished after spending the evening in the college town's bar district celebrating a friend's 21st birthday.

At a press conference Wednesday Police Chief Thomas Tremblay announced that they had located the man, that he was cooperating with authorities and that "he had provided an explanation which at this time has been determined to be noncriminal."
