JACKSON, Miss. (Crime Library) — George Bell III, 33, made his first appearance before a judge in the Jackson Municipal Court Thursday morning to enter a plea on charges of capital murder in the death of his girlfriend, 28-year-old Mary Heather Spencer.

Bell, dressed in prison garb and a green bulletproof vest, kept quiet during the proceedings while his attorney, Thomas Royals, entered a plea of not guilty on Bell's behalf. After accepting the plea, Judge Henry Clay denied a request for bond. A preliminary hearing has not yet been set.

Following the proceedings, Royals made a brief statement to the media.

"This was his initial appearance," Royals said. "We entered a plea of not guilty. There will be a preliminary hearing, and we will maintain that same plea throughout this prosecution; we will defend this young man vigorously and will do our best to see he gets his due process."

In discussing the case with Clarionledger.com, Heather's uncle, Jay Henley, had this to say: "He [Bell] needs to stay in jail. He needs to stay right where he is."

Crime Library received a lot of feedback from the initial story that was published on this case yesterday. One of those respondents, a man who does not wish to be identified, had this to say:

"I knew her [Heather's] ex-boyfriend Dave <redacted>. All of us used to hang out together. You mentioned in the article that it was unclear why George Bell took his abuse of Heather to the next level by killing her. I'll tell you why and this information is verifiable. Dave <redacted's> grandfather died, and Heather wanted to go to the memorial services. George Bell wasn't going to have it. He has never approved of Dave and Heather's continued friendship.
