JACKSON, Miss. (Crime Library) — The story you are about to read should serve as a reminder that abusers, like leopards, generally do not change their spots. Cheesy line? Perhaps, but the reality is all too real. Time after time, I see cases where the warning signs were there, and as in this case, there was a previous history of abuse. Nonetheless, the victims generally hold onto the belief that their partner will change and that the situation will eventually improve. They blind themselves to the obvious, and when their world comes crashing down, they are left beaten or in some cases dead. For those of you involved in such a relationship, I urge you to take something away from Mary Heather Spencer's story.
On Tuesday morning, the Jackson Police Department received a report of a man holding a woman at gunpoint inside a black Infiniti sedan at Highland Village. When a patrol unit arrived on the scene, he followed the car to the BP station at McWillie and Northside. The female occupant quickly exited the vehicle and approached the patrol unit, at which time the driver put a .38 caliber handgun to his head and threatened to kill himself.

The woman who exited the vehicle identified herself as Robbie Bell. She told police the driver of the vehicle was her son, 33-year-old George Bell III. At this time, it is not yet clear why Robbie was in the vehicle or what she told police; however, shortly thereafter, a patrol unit was dispatched to the family residence on Trawick Drive in northeast Jackson, whereupon the responding officer discovered the body of Bell's girlfriend, 28-year-old Mary Heather Spencer.
