According to a spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office, Goodridge's death was caused by "homicidal violence" as a result of gagging and neck compression. The mutilation is believed to have occurred post mortem. Harris was not found at the scene, prompting police to issue an All Points Bulletin so she could be brought in for questioning.
To say Harris was obsessed with revenge would be putting it mildly. Nearly her entire online presence was focused on the subject. From movie reviews she posted online to music she selected for her MySpace profile, she certainly appeared to be a woman steeped in violent thoughts.

For her profile's music selection, Harris chose the song, "Ghostflowers," by Otep—an alternative metal band featuring female vocalists. Perhaps the song's lyrics rather than its rhythm are what prompted Harris to select it. The lyrics, in part, read:
