WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (Crime Library ) — Steven Grant has been arrested for murdering and dismembering his wife in the couple's Washington Township home.  The case came to a head on Friday evening, when investigators discovered a human torso in Grant's garage.  Following the discovery, a massive manhunt was launched for Grant, who was eventually found wandering through the woods in Bliss Township in northern Michigan, over 200 miles from his home.

At about 5:15 p.m. Friday, Grant was pulled over not far from his subdivision and placed into the back of a patrol car.  According to Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel, Grant was detained so that his house could be searched.  Grant was transported to his home, at which time he voluntarily granted the sheriff's department access to the residence.  Once he allowed them to search his home, the sheriff's department could no longer detain him, and he was released.

Forensic investigators from the Michigan State Police Crime Lab, along with deputies from the Macomb County Sheriff's department, conducted the search of Grant's home and of his father's tool and die shop.  At About 7 p.m., they discovered a human torso in Grant's garage. The details of the discovery have not yet been released. 

Investigators immediately sought to arrest Grant, but he had already fled the area in a truck he had borrowed from a friend.  As authorities launched a massive manhunt for Grant, a separate group of investigators descended upon Stony Creek Metropark, where they found more body parts thought to belong to Tara Grant.  Hackel said his department had received information leading them to the park, but would not elaborate.

Not long before authorities had pulled him over, Grant had agreed to sit down with The Detroit News.  During the interview, Grant discussed his last conversation with his wife, before she, according to Grant, left in a dark-colored sedan.  Grant said the couple argued over her frequent trips and the fact that she was angry with him because he wanted a divorce.

"Before she left, the last words she said to me were, 'Don't forget to take my truck in on Monday' (for repairs)," he said.  "That really took the wind out of my sails.  She was telling me that's all I was; it was like, 'You be the valet,' and take my car in."

Grant also said that his wife's frequent business trips affected her relationship with their children, and that he was "a better mom" because he would take care of them and make sure they were involved in after school activities.  As the interview came to a close, Grant maintained his innocence and said that he had nothing to do with his wife's disappearance.  He did admit that he understood why people might consider him a suspect.
