GILBERT, Ariz.  (Crime Library) —  Jackie Hartman, a 19-year-old nursing student, was last seen at two o'clock Sunday morning in the company of 25-year-old Jonathan Burns. It was the couple's first date. They were supposed to meet Jackie's sister a couple of hours later, but they didn't show up.

On Monday, police found Jackie's purse, shirt, flip-flop sandals, bra and panties stuffed in a trash dumpster at an apartment complex a few blocks from Burns' house in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa.

Jackie's shirt and bra had been torn in half. The shirt was soaked in blood and shot through with bullet holes.

Attached to a gate outside Burns' Mesa home, police found a sign that read "No trespassing. Violators will be shot. Survivors will be shot again."

Tuesday, police announced they had arrested Burns and charged him with one count of sexual assault. He is being held in jail in Phoenix on a $500,000 bond.

Local newspapers have reported the police are treating the case as a homicide although Jackie's body has not been found, and they have asked for the public's help in tracking Burns' whereabouts Sunday between 5:00 a.m. and 11:00. a.m.
