If the latter is true, then perhaps Ahmad suffered from what Middle East terror expert Daniel Pipes calls Sudden Jihad Syndrome. Pipes uses the term to describe Muslims who lead quiet lives before turning to terrorism.

Miami school spokesman Quintin Taylor told Crime Library the school system submits copies of applicants' fingerprint cards to the FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement as part of its background investigation of potential teachers.

Ahmad has a detention hearing scheduled in U.S. District Court Friday, November 2.
