McFarland was considered a person of interest in the case since the investigation began. According to police, he initially cooperated, but when they asked him to come in for a second interview, he invoked his right to an attorney.

According to Wayne County Prosecutor Mike Shipman, the decision to arrest McFarland came after his office received the pathologist's report, which revealed that Erin died of "asphyxia due to strangulation."

The first time Centerville residents heard of 19-year-old Erin's death was when they read her obituary in the September 2 edition of the Palladium-Item. There was no mention in the paper or in the news that Erin's death was suspicious. From the very start, investigators were tight-lipped, and nary a word was said suggesting that a murder may have taken place.

Six days later, on September 7, police were again called to the Stanley home, at which time they found Erin's sister, 18-year-old Kelly Stanley, unresponsive. Paramedics were unable to revive her, and she died at the scene.

McFarland is being held without bail in the Wayne County Jail. On October 10, Judge David A. Kolger entered a "not guilty" plea on McFarland's behalf during his arraignment. A pre-trial conference in the case has been scheduled for December 10 before Judge David A. Kolger. McFarland's trial is set to begin January 8.
