On Tuesday, Gomez pled guilty to a charge of terroristic threats before Ramsey County District Judge Elena Ostby. In exchange for his plea, Prosecutor Mark Hammer agreed to drop animal cruelty and torture charges.
During questioning, Gomez told the court that he was not responsible for the dog's death but that he had watched while another unnamed party shot the dog in Gomez's basement. Gomez said afterwards he encouraged the man to behead the dog with a chain saw while he videotaped it on his cellphone. Gomez also admitted that the gift-wrapped package containing the dog's severed head was intended to terrorize Crystal.
Gomez will not be formally sentenced until November 27; however, according to Hammer, Gomez agreed to an upward departure from sentencing guidelines, which will result in an aggravated sentence of one year and nine months. Gomez will be required to serve at least two-thirds of that sentence before he will be considered for release.

"She's already got him sitting up and shaking hands," Shirley told the Associated Press. "That's just Crystal—she's always loved animals."
