The St. Paul Police Department spearheaded the investigation to find Chevy's killer. Initially they refused to comment on whether they had any suspects, but from the beginning, Shirley knew exactly who was responsible.
"[Gomez] has been giving her problems for several months now," Shirley said. "He used to keep her in his house, and he wouldn't let her leave. She would call me, and I would say, 'You let my granddaughter come home, or I am coming down there.' So then he'd let her go. He likes her; he didn't want her to leave. He has a crush on her. He wants to be with her, but she does not want to be with him. That's the key to the whole thing."

After speaking with Crystal's grandmother, I called Gomez and asked him whether he was involved in the death and dismemberment of Crystal's dog. He expressed his innocence and laughed at the prospect of being a suspect in the case.
"I don't know nothing about it," Gomez said. "This is ridiculous. These people are tripping. Why would I do that? Why would I kill her dog? I didn't do it, and I got nothing to say about it."
Gomez hung up the phone before he could be questioned further.
