In 2002, Skylar enlisted the aid of a few friends to burglarize the home of a Ditech coworker. Once inside the victim's residence, a cohort discovered that Skylar was carrying plastic handcuffs and a loaded gun and wanted to know why. "Skylar told him it was in case things got out of hand," according to a law enforcement official.
"Skylar said he would use the gun on the victim and dump the body in Mexico. He said not to worry because he had done it before," the official said. "Then, what do you know? Months later, John Jarvi's body is found in Mexico."
That appeared to be too much for the accomplice, who bolted out the front door as the intended victim was walking up his driveway. Deleon saw what was happening and fled, but police captured him a short time later. He was convicted of burglary and possessing a gun and was sentenced to a year in jail.

Skylar opted to serve his sentence at the Seal Beach City Jail and was granted day furlough privileges by the judge in the case. Such a program cost $1,200 a week and meant more debt for the Deleons. It was during one of his furloughs that Skylar convinced Jarvi to front him $50,000 for a purported business deal that would be culminated in Mexico. The pair drove down there together but only Skylar returned, slitting Jarvi's throat and leaving him for dead along a Mexican highway.
But instead of paying his bills, Skylar used Jarvi's cash to buy a diamond ring for Jennifer and equipment for his boat.
While in jail, Skylar also befriended one of guards who became an accomplice in killing the Hawks, according to prosecutors. While on board the Hawkses yacht, Skylar convinced the couple to sign over power of attorney in an effort to save their lives. They were killed anyway and Skylar later stole their car and drained their bank account.
