ALFRED, Maine (Crime Library) — "This is a bad, bad nightmare that we need to wake up from," Kelly Gorham's mother, Pauline Gorham, said during a press conference Saturday. "Kelly always thought that everyone, down deep, has goodness. All of you people, please, dig down deep to that goodness and if you know anything, pick up the phone. Help us find our Kelly. If you know Kelly, how can you not help find her?"

According to police Kelly, age 30, was last seen around 11:00 P.M. on Aug. 7. Her landlord and another neighbor had been visiting her apartment, which is just off Route 202 in Alfred. When Kelly, a nursing intern, failed to show up for work at Maine Medical Center in Portland the next day, a co-worker called the police and reported her missing.
When the police went to investigate they found Kelly's car at her apartment and her four dogs were inside the apartment, but Kelly was nowhere to be found. Police have not disclosed whether her purse or cell phone were found at the scene.

"For her to cease contact with everybody is completely out of character; there doesn't seem to be any reason for her to do that," State Police Lt. Brian McDonough told the Kennebec Journal Morning Sentinel last week. "This is completely inconsistent with her usual behavior ... everybody is extremely concerned for her well-being. It is alarming and needs to be taken seriously and that's what we're trying to do."
In the days following Kelly's disappearance, investigators used police dogs to conduct ground searches around Kelly's apartment and a state police airplane was used to search a large wooded area across the street.
