The call ended abruptly, Lang told a jury in federal court in Fargo on Tuesday.

As the trial of Alfonzo Rodriquez Jr., the convicted Minnesota sex offender charged with abducting and killing the 22-year-old University of North Dakota student, raced through its second day, new details emerged about the young woman's brutal death.

According to court documents, authorities say Rodriguez kidnapped the young woman as she was chatting with her boyfriend on the phone, clearly, they argue, with the intention of sexually assaulting her. Though federal prosecutors, who for the first time in 100 years in North Dakota are seeking the death penalty case, did not mention it in their opening statements, authorities have found forensic evidence suggesting that the young woman was in fact sexually attacked.
