MADISON, WI (Crime Library)  — On Monday morning searchers found a female body on private property in a densely wooded Fitchburg area just off U.S. route 14.  Preliminary evidence suggests that the person was a victim of homicide.  Dane County Coroner John Stanley has tentatively identified the victim as 22-year-old Kelly Nolan, a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UW-W) student who was last seen early June 23 of this year.

According to Madison police chief Noble Wray, cellphone technology led searchers to the area, located approximately 10 miles south of downtown Madison.  Over 100 police officers and volunteers assisted in the search, and cadaver dogs further narrowed the search grid.

In speaking with the Wisconsin State Journal, Wray declined to elaborate on further details of the investigation or the evidence that his technicians recovered from the scene.

"We are always, in missing persons investigations, very, very careful about what information we release," Wray said.  "There's speculation we could engage in here, but it's really important, given the gravity of the situation, that we don't speculate and conclude on some things."

"We have a lot of physical evidence.  We have an area that we need to make sure that we're collecting as much forensic evidence as possible ... The media's deadlines are not our deadlines.  We have to get information out as best as we can but it cannot dictate an investigation."

On the morning of Friday, June 22, Kelly went to a job interview in Madison and then spent the rest of the day with her sister, 20-year-old April Nolan.  The two spent time together until around 5 p.m. when they parted company in front of Kelly's apartment.
