Kevin Underwood Discussed Cannibalism Online in 2003

As Kevin Underwood reported in his own blog entry here, on September 11, 2004, his younger sister was named Marci. Optymyst posted the full transcript of this chat session in her weblog on April 18th, 2006. As of April 20, 2006, there was still no mention of Underwood's sister easily found in any of the available media reports about his arrest for Jamie Bolin's murder. That tends to lend some veracity to the transcript.

Now that the public knows that Jamie Rose Bolin was a bespectacled girl who may have reminded Underwood of his little sister, reading what he may have said that now seems related to the crime he allegedly confessed to committing is frightening. The illusion is that he was giving warning signals.

Other than the chat transcript, though, was Underwood broadcasting any warnings in all his internet posts? His Usenet posts could have been construed as his playing along with the sick jokes. Underwood's blogging was virtually indistinguishable in content from most personal weblogs found in a random search at technorati.com, the blog search engine of choice for many. Many young men are disaffected, unsatisfied with their jobs, lonely, and a little too devoted to their lives online. The vast majority of them wouldn't kill a fly.

Kevin Underwood was the internet personification of what frightened people in the past about convicted killers like Ted Bundy, or Dennis Rader. Ann Rule's The Stranger Beside Me would not have been written had not the celebrated crime writer had this reaction to having known Bundy personally. Dennis Rader held onto his secret life as Wichita's shadowy BTK Strangler for more than 30 years because outwardly, he was so normal, to most who knew him.

Kevin Underwood has brought home to everyone reading his blogs or his message board posts the still-stunning lesson about men who would be monsters. Too often, they really do seem just like the rest of us.
