Purcell, OK (Crime Library) —  "Here's something to get the taste buds [jumping]...." wrote 'jonny bravo,' prefacing the image he placed in a discussion thread in the Usenet newsgroup alt.slack on September 4, 2003.

The photo montage seen after clicking jonny bravo's link was of a strange religious ritual in an East Asian country in which the deceased was eaten after death. The photos showed an elderly nun in white who had just passed away. Then the cooking and eating her flesh was recorded, though not in close-up or particularly colorful detail. In spite of the grainy nature of the photos, they were still deeply disturbing.

The poster of the link to the gory image was, in the spirit of many messages found in that newsgroup, making a sick joke.

On Thursday, September 4, 2003, SubSpecies23 posted a response to the photos of cannibals in action in alt.slack. SubSpecies23 wrote, "That doesn't look like a Nun to me, it looks like a little kid."

Kevin Underwood, 26, was arrested on April 14, 2006 for the murder of 10-year-old Jamie Rose Bolin, his freckle-faced, redheaded next-door neighbor. Authorities announced in a press conference following Underwood's arrest that the 6'0", 250+ lb. Underwood, also a redhead, had planned to torture, rape, murder, cook, and eat the girl's body. McClain County, Oklahoma (OK) District Attorney Tim Kuykendall indicated that Underwood may have been planning his crime for more than a year.

On the internet, one of Kevin Ray Underwood's frequently used screen names was SubSpecies23. One of his favorite pursuits, aside from playing games online and off, was chatting online about the Church of the Subgenius, termed a 'satirical postmodern parody religion' by Wikipedia.

Almost 3 years before Jamie Rose Bolin disappeared on April 12, 2006, only to be found murdered in Underwood's apartment two days later, SubSpecies23 was commenting to other "subgeniuses" that photos of a cooked and semi-de-fleshed nun looked like "a little kid."
