Consumed By Grief?
About an hour after her body arrived at the hospital, Kevin Bean, who had been notified of his estranged wife's death by his father-in-law, arrived at the hospital. Detective Joseph Brown of the West Reading Police told Crime Library that Bean was met by Deputy Coroner Wally A. Woytovich and Margaret Marino, a technician at the hospital. Both told him several times that he was welcome to view his wife's body but was not to touch her.
Authorities say they don't know why he defied the edict — whether he was trying to express grief and perhaps even some tenderness, or whether he was in some way trying to tamper with the dead woman's body. All they are willing to say is that Bean would not obey the restriction, and when Woytovich and Marino tried to stop him, he assaulted them, severely enough that Woytovich suffered head injuries and Marino's arm was broken.
Bean, who is free on $50,000 bail is scheduled to appear in court on those charges on May 12. Dimitriou declined Wednesday to discuss that case.

And last month, a judge in Berks County ordered him to stand trial for the Jan. 11 attack on his now-dead wife, a move that even the dead woman's attorney called "highly unusual."
In the meantime, the circumstances of Kristin Bean's death have become fodder for amateur sleuths on the Internet, bloggers who, because they are unrestricted by the rules of procedure or the need for empirical evidence, speculate that Kristin Bean was killed and her death made to look like a suicide. Dimitriou dismisses such speculation. "There's really no evidence, there's no evidence at all that Mr. Bean was involved in his wife's death," he said. And as for the bloggers? "They can say whatever they want," he said.
