SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Crime Library)  In today's society, criminal acts are a daily occurrence.  The steady stream of brutal stories in the news has a numbing effect on our senses and we are losing our ability to be shocked.  Nevertheless, every now and then a crime shakes us to our very core and makes us wonder how a human being can be so unspeakably cruel to a child.

On March 6, a group of angry tenants gathered in front of their apartment building on the 1300 block of West Winnepeg Avenue.  For two weeks, residents of the triplex had been living with a horrendous stench.  Some thought it was a dead raccoon or possum, but others questioned whether a dead animal could be responsible for a stench of that magnitude.  Whatever the source, one thing was certain, everyone was sick of living with it.

Eventually, several residents traced the odor to a crawl space underneath one of the apartments.  One of the men in the group agreed to hunch down to see if he could determine what was causing the odor.  As he adjusted his eyes to the darkness, he noticed a black garbage bag that had been tossed under the house.  It appeared as though someone's family pet had died and that rather than disposing of the carcass in a proper fashion, the individual had tossed it under the building in the hopes that it would go unnoticed.

The man was not about to reach under the building and grab the bag.  After all, no one knew for sure what was inside, and the last thing he wanted was for something to jump out at him.  Instead, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a small knife.  He wanted to get a good look at the contents before he moved it.

As the man carefully cut along the seam of the bag, something began to protrude through the hole he was making.  As he slid the knife down towards the bottom, unimaginable horror washed over his face.  It took a minute for his eyes to tell his brain that what he saw poking out of the bag was a tiny human foot.  The smell had been emanating from the remains of small child, a child who had been carelessly discarded in the darkened crawl space.  As if that were not terrible enough, residents noticed a second bag sitting in the darkened space.  Fearful of what it might contain, they slowly backed away, and someone dialed 911.
