When the police questioned him, Burns claimed he and Jackie had sex and that he dropped her off at her parents' house at 5:00 a.m. He went home after that, he said.

Information from Burns's cell phone provider, however, showed that instead of stopping in Mesa, which is just north of Gilbert, Burns traveled north into the desert on Highway 87, known locally as the Beeline Highway.

Despite the fact that he lived with his fiancee and brother, Burns could not provide any witnesses to corroborate his whereabouts between 5:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. the day Jackie Hartman disappeared.

Police arrested Burns on Monday, Jan. 29, and booked him with one count of sexual assault.

On Feb. 9, a grand jury indicted the ex-con for first-degree murder, kidnapping, sexual assault, and a weapons violation.

Sgt. Duncan said Tuesday that additional people may also be charged. "There are other aspects to this investigation," he said.

Duncan named Burns's fiancee and brother as "persons of interest."
