The day after Jackie's parents reported her missing, police found her bullet-riddled, bloodstained shirt, along with her purse, panties, flip flop sandals, and torn bra in a trash dumpster near Burns's home in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa.
During questioning, Burns admitted to police that he'd meet Jackie early on the morning of Jan. 28. He claimed they had sex and that he'd dropped her off at her home in nearby Gilbert around 5:00 a.m. before returning to his own house.

However, investigators discovered that records for Burns's cell phone show he traveled north on state Highway 87 around 5:00 a.m., and that he cannot account for his whereabouts until almost noon.
For two weeks, police and Jackie's family and friends have searched along Highway 87, reaching as far north as the community of Sunflower, about 45 miles from Mesa.
"We do believe Jackie Hartman is dead," Gilbert police Lt. Joe Ruet told The Buffalo News Friday. "We have information and physical evidence (that suggests that). We are continuing to search for her body."
Friday, police searched Burns's home for a second time.
