According to her father, Maureen told family and friends that she wanted a divorce. She also said that if anything ever happened to her, it would be her husband's fault.
"She was terribly afraid of her husband," Fitzgerald said.
If Paul Fields was responsible for his wife's death, the motive was almost certainly financial, according to Maureen's father. The couple, who has been together for 20 years, owned a lot of property, Fitzgerald said, property that is in both of their names.

Two months after Maureen disappeared, Paul Fields tried to have Maureen's name removed from the ownership records of their property so he could sell it, Maureen's father told Crime Library.
"The only thing on his mind is money and property," Fitzgerald said.
Nye County Sheriff Tony De Meo, himself a retired police officer from Jersey City, N.J., told Fitzgerald that Paul Fields has refused to take a polygraph examination.
While the investigation into Maureen's disappearance continues, Fitzgerald said he has taken legal action to become the custodian of his daughter's assets, something he said that has infuriated her husband.
