LOWVILlE, N.Y. (Crime Library)  —  It had rained heavily for several days, and the Black River, a normally placid waterway in rural Lewis County, had turned ominous. It had spilled over its banks and now it was licking the edge of the remote two-lane a few miles outside the town of Lowville

It was, according to Lewis County authorities, about 1 a.m. last Saturday morning, and 26-year-old Brenna Moore and her husband of five years were taking the road as a short-cut home. Though the couple had their problems in the past — there had even been a brief trial separation — they seemed to be on the mend, authorities say.

Like every couple they had their minor disagreements, of course, but nothing significant, and last Saturday morning, as they made their way along the dark road by the fast-flowing Black River, one of those minor conflagrations — "a simple, little married persons' tiff," as one investigator put it — erupted. According to authorities, Brenna stormed out of the car.

That was the last time she was seen alive.

This afternoon, six days after she vanished, and following a massive search, her body was pulled from the river, authorities confirmed.

The grim discovery capped a massive manhunt that spanned several days. Searchers have repeatedly combed the riverbanks and the flood plain along the Black River looking for any trace of her as helicopters have flown over the receding river. Earlier today, fast-moving airboats were dispatched.
