LA CROSSE, Wisc. (Crime Library) There is, police have said, no mystery surrounding the death of Lucas Homan, the 21-year-old University of Wisconsin at La Crosse student who became the eighth young man to perish in the waters of the Mississippi River in the past nine years.

The young athlete, who was last seen visiting several local bars in the wee hours of Saturday morning, apparently drowned in 10 feet of water near Riverside Park, according to an autopsy released Tuesday. His body was recovered Monday after an extensive search along the river.

Though a police spokesman did not return telephone calls from Crime Library Monday, and though toxicology reports on the young man's body would not be completed for weeks,  Police Chief Ed Kondracki told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he is convinced that Homan's death, like the seven that preceded it, was the result of what he called "binge drinking."

"Clearly, intoxication played a major role in this unfortunate tragedy," Kondracki told the newspaper.

Jerry Homan, the young man's father, declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding his son's death.
