Latest death rekindles questions

Despite the chief's conclusion about the case, the La Crosse police and agents from the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation are still investigating the death.

The chief's comments have apparently done little to quell the speculation and fear that the young man's death has rekindled. For years, residents and students at the university have wondered whether the string of deaths, most involving young athletes, may be the result of something more nefarious. Among other things, residents have speculated that some or all of the young men may have been the victims of a killer. Authorities have insisted that they have aggressively investigated that possibility and so far have found no evidence to support it. Instead, they contend, the most likely explanation is that the young men who have drowned in the river all died accidentally after drinking heavily and wandering too close to the deep and fast-moving river at the edge of town.
