Cops eyed sex convicts, closed in Rodriguez within days
In all, authorities interviewed Rodriguez three times before finally arresting him 10 days after Dru's abduction. But according to testimony given Wednesday, authorities suspected him almost immediately.
According to published reports, MBCA Agent Dan Alhquist told the court that one of the first steps investigators took was to check out the alibis of seven convicted sex offenders who were in the area around the time that Dru was abducted. Rodriguez, who had been free for only six months after serving a 23-year prison sentence for attempted kidnapping and assault in Minnesota, was the only high-risk offender on the list.

Alfonzo Rodriguez, Jr. |
Authorities allege that Rodriguez crossed the state line and traveled to Grand Forks where he abducted the pretty young co-ed at knifepoint with the intention of raping her. He tossed a plastic bag over her head and drove through the night to a remote area outside Crookston where he allegedly raped her, stabbed her and dumped her body, they charged.
Because the crime allegedly spanned two states and because it involved allegations of kidnapping, Rodriguez is being tried in federal court. If convicted, Rodriguez could become the first person in a century sentenced to death for a crime committed in North Dakota.
