"Be suspicious," Rodriguez told investigators
In fact, the tapes played in court Wednesday seem to show Rodriguez' alibi unraveling as the agents prod him for details. During the interviews, Rodriguez admitted to authorities that he had driven to Grand Forks, N.D., on Nov. 22, 2003 — the same day Dru was abducted from a Grand Forks mall — and he admitted that he had done some shopping. While there, he told authorities, he had stopped to see a movie — he claimed it was the violent cult classic "Once Upon A Time in Mexico." Afterward, he said, he stopped at a McDonalds in East Grand Forks for a bite to eat. He jovially told investigators "eating, I always remember."

But according to the tapes, authorities had checked out Rodriguez' alibi, and it was quickly unraveling. A quick check of the local movie listings proved that the film Rodriguez claimed to have seen was not playing in Grand Forks the night Dru was abducted and killed, and the surveillance tape from the McDonald's where he claimed he had his clearest memories of the night showed no sign of him having been there.
Authorities confronted him with these facts, and asked him what he would think if he were the one asking the questions.
