RENO, Nev. (Crime Library) — Now, Darren Mack is officially an international fugitive.
The swinging millionaire pawnbroker, now one of the FBI's most wanted for his alleged role in the stabbing death of his estranged wife last week and the attempted murder of the judge who was overseeing the couple's contentious divorce, failed Thursday morning to turn himself in to U.S. consular officials in the Mexican resort community of Puerto Vallarta, authorities said.
At a hastily convened press conference today, investigators said that they had developed credible information since Monday that the 45-year-old murder suspect, known for his taste for the tropics, had been sighted in several beach resorts on Mexico's western coast, including Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, and Mazatlan.

In fact, earlier this week, Mack contacted Reno District Attorney Dick Gammick and expressed an interest in surrendering to authorities. "He would not tell me where he was at," Gammick told reporters. But while investigators were never able to precisely pinpoint his location, based on information gathered by investigators and on some of Mack's own statements, they determined that he was, as expected, in western Mexico.
Authorities last spoke with Mack on Wednesday and hammered out the details of his surrender. He was to have turned himself in this morning at the U.S. Consulate in Puerto Vallarta at about 8:30 a.m. Pacific Time. But by mid-morning, it appeared that Mack has changed his mind, authorities said.
