Investigators ask travelers to help track Mack

Authorities say that they suspect, but are not certain, that Mack may still be in Mexico, though for the moment, they are stumped as to precisely where he is, or where he might be heading.

Still, investigators are urging anyone who may be traveling to the Mexican beaches to be on the lookout for the dapper fugitive, whom they believe to be dangerous and probably armed.

Thursday's press conference marked the first significant announcement on the case in several days, though authorities, local, state and federal, had clearly been tracking Mack. As early as Monday, investigators hinted that, while they were still looking for Mack's rented SUV in Northern California, they had strong indications that Mack himself had fled south.

Authorities declined to say whether they have determined precisely how Mack slipped across the border.

Nor was it immediately clear whether Mack had fled to Mexico for the surf and sun or whether he appreciated the protections Mexican law might offer him if he is captured there. Like many other nations, Mexico refuses to extradite suspects who could face execution in the United States.
