On the afternoon of April 14, Kiva called a family member on her cell phone, and said that she was shopping at the Voice of America Center in West Chester.  She was doing some last-minute shopping for her daughter's 16th birthday.  That was the last time anyone heard from her.  When she failed to show up for her daughter's party, and calls to her cell phone went unanswered, her family began to fear the worst.

Kiva's brother, Ateela Gazaway, told authorities that on the day that she disappeared, his sister had a heated argument with her live-in boyfriend, Harvey Johnson, Jr.  When police went to interview Johnson, he was nowhere to be found.  His disappearance quickly raised eyebrows, and police told the media that he was "a person of interest" in the case.  Authorities in Florida arrested him on April 20.

According to Ateela, Kiva's two teenage daughters, Arienne, 16, and Jazmine, 18, are having a difficult time dealing with their mother's death.  "They are kind of in denial," Ateela told the Cincinnati Enquirer, adding, "But it will hit."
