When cops in North Carolina nabbed the now-62-year-old Sandra Powers last month, the arrest gave renewed hope to Alan's family and friends that justice might at last be served and that his murder might be avenged.

Although Capt. Bo Matthews, commander of the Oklahoma City Police Department's homicide unit, said his department has no plans to renew their investigation into Alan's death, the District Attorney's Office recently assigned two investigators to the case.

"I wouldn't rule out the possibility that we might be going to North Carolina if we think it will be fruitful," First Assistant District Attorney Scott Rowland told Crime Library.

Rowland acknowledged that there was not a lot of physical evidence left at the crime scene, but he said, "I'm rather optimistic that one day we will be able to solve this case."

He said the dogged pursuit of investigative leads and the changing relationships between witnesses can sometimes break an old case wide open.

Meanwhile, even after 22 years, Alan's friends still mourn his loss.

"He was my best friend ever," Karl McKinney said.

"You just take your best friend times a hundred," said Nils Rockne, grandson of legendary Notre Dame Fighting Irish football coach Knute Rockne. "That's Al Rehrig. He was just a super guy."
