Friends and family always suspected foul play
What authorities have said is that for months they tracked down leads and interviewed potential witnesses, though from the beginning, they declined to speculate about whether the young woman had been abducted, run off or perhaps even committed suicide.
Friends and family insisted that suicide was unlikely. They point, among other things, to her postings on her MySpace.com page, in which she is described herself as "giggly like a school girl," and at the same time fanatically devoted to her then infant daughter. "I'm telling you, that girl was happy," said one long time friend. "She was happy not because her end was coming, she was happy because her life was beginning."

In an interview some ten days after she vanished, her father, Scott Harm, said she was so excited about her new apartment that she had telephoned her father the very night she disappeared, pleading with him to help her move immediately. When Scott Harm urged her to be patient and wait until the following day, she persisted, saying, "No, dad, you don't understand, I've got my own place, I've got to go to work tomorrow, I've got to pay rent."
In the end, they decided to put off the move for three days. By that point, Deidre was gone.
