News Update: Monica Sharp Safely Returns Home

By Walter Bell

Richmond, Va. (Crime Library) — Missing teenager, Monica Sharp, has been returned to her family in Richmond, Virginia. Around 8 o'clock, Monday morning, the 17-year-old girl was "dropped off" at her Museum District residence, supposedly by 57-year-old suspect, Jeffrey Nichols.

Monica was placed in an ambulance with her parents and escorted by Richmond police to a local hospital. Police believe Monica "voluntarily" returned home. "She appears to be in good condition, but is undergoing a medical examination today," said Richmond Police Department spokesperson Kirsten Nelson. "It's a case of a runaway who came back."

Witnesses reported seeing Nichol's green Oldsmobile Alero in an alley behind the Sharp's home on the day before and morning of her return. On Tuesday morning, October 25th, the Henrico County Division of Police received an anonymous phone call that the Illinois man's car was in a Wal-Mart parking lot in their county.

Henrico police rushed to the Brook Road location and arrested Nichols without resistance. "The Illinois man wanted in connection with Richmond runaway Monica Sharp's five week odyssey away from home was taken into custody by police this morning," said a Henrico Police spokesperson.

Richmond police were quickly notified about the arrest of Nichols and now have him in their custody. The 57-year-old suspect reportedly gave information to authorities on his plans to marry the 17-year-old girl.

Jeffrey Nichols is being held without bond and is to be charged with luring Monica Sharp from her home by posing as a 12-year-old boy on a chat-line. Use of a communications system to facilitate certain offenses involving children is a felony. A court hearing is to be scheduled for him sometime in November.
