PORTUGAL— Judge Jorge Loureiro sentenced convicted serial killer Antonio Costa, 58, to 64 years in prison this week and ordered him to pay 370,000 euros in damages to the family members of his three victims. Despite his lengthy sentence, Costa will be behind bars no more than 25 years — the maximum term permitted by the country's constitution. However, even that term could be reduced if President Cavaco Silva approves a pending bill that would allow serious offenders to have their prison sentences halved. Silva has until September 15 to make a formal ruling on the bill. It is interesting to note that Costa was the first serial killer to go on trial in Portugal.

HOUSTON, TX— Last year police arrested Bilford Dwight Junious, 36, on seven counts of rape. At that time it was also announced that Junious was the prime suspect in the murders of six women whose bodies were found dumped along roadsides between January and July 2006. Investigators were shocked this week when DNA evidence revealed that at least three men are responsible for the attacks. "They assumed we had the right guy — that it was over," Steve Straughter, an investigator with the Houston Police Department, told the Houston Chronicle today, adding, "but someone else is still out there." Junious remains behind bars for the rapes but is no longer considered a suspect in the murders. The investigation is ongoing.

SCOTLAND — This week prison officials revealed that convicted serial killer Robert Black, 60, recently wrote a letter to Crown Prosecution Service, offering his help in the search for Madeleine McCann, a three-year-old girl who disappeared in May 2007 while on holiday with her parents in Portugal. In his letter, Black allegedly said his knowledge as a child killer could prove useful to investigators. Black is serving a life sentence for the murder of three children. He is considered a suspect in at least eight other murders and multiple sexual assaults on children. Officials at Scotland Yard are reviewing the content of Black's letter.
