On March 18, 2007, after hearing the evidence against him, a jury of six men and six women found Steven Avery guilty of first-degree intentional homicide and illegal possession of a firearm. Citing a lack of evidence, they found him not guilty of mutilation of a corpse.
Following Avery's trial, prosecutors offered Dassey a second deal, whereby in exchange for a plea of guilty, Dassey would receive a sentence of no more 30 years. Again, Dassey turned down the offer.

The following month, after hearing the evidence against him, including his own confession, a jury of his peers found Dassey guilty on all charges. Following the hearing he was remanded to the Manitowoc County Jail.
In June, Avery received a life sentence with no possibility of parole. Unfortunately, a death sentence was not an option. Wisconsin abolished the death penalty in 1853.
