When police questioned Avery, he denied any involvement in Teresa's death. He admitted she came to the junkyard, but claimed she took photos of the used car and then left. Investigators did not buy Avery's story and on November 15, 2005, he was charged with first-degree intentional homicide and mutilating a corpse.

There was no question as to whether Steven Avery was involved in Teresa's death. The evidence was overwhelming. The bigger question was what happened to her on that fateful Halloween day. Luckily for investigators, they would soon find out.
Investigators interviewed more than a dozen people in regard to Teresa's death. Among those questioned was Avery's nephew, Brendan Dassey. When police questioned Dassey he seemed to know several key details that had not been released. Upon further prodding, Dassey spilled his guts, admitting to participating in Teresa's death and describing the events leading up to it.

On March 1, 2006, Dassey told investigators that on the afternoon of October 31, 2005, he heard a woman's screams coming from his uncle's trailer. When he knocked on the door, his uncle invited him inside and led him to the bedroom, where Teresa was naked and restrained on the bed with handcuffs and leg irons. Dassey said his uncle told him that he had already raped Teresa and he encouraged him to do the same. Despite desperate pleas of help from Teresa, Dassey raped her while his uncle watched.
