By  Seamus McGraw

The trial, which was marked earlier this year by a difficult and time-consuming jury selection process, as well as failed attempts by the defense to win a change of venue, has picked up steam since opening statements on Monday. In Tuesday's session, 11 witnesses, eight of them law enforcement officers, testified. So did Lang, who recounted his brief telephone conversation with the doomed young woman.

According to his testimony, she had been telling him about the purchase of her new bag, when she was apparently interrupted, and Lang believed he heard her exclaim something to the effect of, "OK, OK," before the call ended abruptly. Before he hung up, Lang testified that he "said goodbye to her and said 'I love you.' "
