INDEPENDENCE,Calif. (Crime Library) — Authorities are awaiting test results to determine whether the severely decomposed remains discovered in the desert outside of Independence last week are those of Renee Fox, a 25-year-old divorced mother who vanished in June after her car broke down on a remote dirt track in the high desert.

The remains, little more than bone and a few scraps of clothing which authorities have so far not described, were found Aug. 10th by an off roader traveling alone a remote fire track about five miles outside of the town of Independence, according to the Inyo County Sheriff's Department. The remains were found just a short distance from a gravel and dirt roadway, a spokeswoman said and they are expected to be submitted to a medical examiner for autopsy.

So far, authorities have not been able to identify the remains, nor was it immediately clear how the person died.

But the find has rekindled suspicion that Fox, a young divorcee who had, by all accounts, gotten lost in the high desert during an emotionally charged trip in June may have met her end in the rugged back country.

Initially, investigators had believed that the young woman might have found her way out of the desert and onto a nearby Interstate — at least one witness had reported seeing a woman who vaguely matched some aspects of Fox's description near the highway the day after she vanished.

But there have been no confirmed sightings of her since, and family members have long suspected that Fox never made it out of the rugged desert.  Family members insist that if the young woman had survived her trek through the desert, she certainly would have contacted her five-year old son, now in the custody of Fox's ex-husband, and failing that, would have turned to her family for help.
