The day before her disappearance, Danielle went to the Bloomfield Police Department with Adam Gault and told investigators that her parents were neglecting and abusing her. Authorities deemed the claims to be without merit and Danielle ran away the following day.
From the start, police suspected Gault of harboring Danielle and he was brought in for questioning several times; each time he denied any involvement in her disappearance and investigators did not have enough evidence to obtain a search warrant. However over the last few months all of that began to change.

In the spring of 2007, several of Danielle's friends came forward and told authorities that Danielle had had an ongoing relationship with Gault prior to her disappearance and that she had told them she was having sex with Gault and that they were in love.
Bloomfield police also received information from West Hartford police in regard to a 1998 complaint that Gault had allegedly harbored two 15-year-old runaway girls. When Bloomfield investigators contacted one of the girls she told them Gault had raped her on several occasions.
When investigators presented this new information to a judge, they were able to obtain a search and seizure warrant for Gault's home. In addition to discovering Danielle at the residence, investigators confiscated several incriminating items, including fishnet stockings, S&M paraphernalia, studded bracelets, photographs, videotapes and semen-stained underwear, purportedly belonging to Danielle.
