SEYMOUR, Ind. (Crime Library) — Authorities in the southern part of Indiana have been warned to be particularly vigilant after investigators probing the sniper shootings along interstate highways I-65 and I-69 near Muncie Sunday received tips that more attacks might be on the way.
At a press conference Monday, Indiana State Police officials confirmed that among the 50 tips that the agency has received since launching its probe were two that warned of more attacks. Authorities cautioned that the tips, which warned of further attacks in both the northeastern quarter of the state, and in the south, might be false. But as the probe into the spate of shootings that claimed the life of one man and wounded another ground into its second day, authorities were not taking any chances. The State Police issues an alert to authorities in both regions.

Meanwhile authorities also confirmed that the FBI has joined the probe and that together they had recovered bullet fragments from the vehicles hit during the three hour shooting spree that spanned 50 miles, and have sent them to the state police ballistics lab for testing.
Among other things, authorities are hoping that the fragments will tell them whether they are searching for a lone gunman. Authorities have said they don't yet know whether a single sniper was responsible for all the attacks, whether they are looking for two or more shooters working in concert, or whether the shootings that have frightened much of northeastern Indiana were random and isolated events.
